Are they different—or just two names for the same hand-blown art glass tradition?
Kugelhouse has specialized in both since 2000, helping collectors and gift-givers understand what truly sets these glass orbs apart—and what makes them the same.
What’s the Difference?
The short answer: there isn’t much of a difference. Both Kugels and Friendship Balls are mouth-blown glass spheres, handcrafted using the same tools, furnaces, and artistry. In fact, “Friendship Ball” is simply a more modern, English-language term for what German glassmakers historically called a Kugel—the word for “ball.”
Over time, the term “Friendship Ball” became popular in North America and the UK because it reflected the emotional meaning behind the gift. A Friendship Ball symbolizes goodwill, connection, and shared light—exactly the qualities embodied by traditional glass Kugels for more than a century.
The Shared Craftsmanship
Whether you call it a Kugel or a Friendship Ball, the process is the same: artisans gather molten glass at over 2,000°F, roll in layers of color frits, and blow the orb into shape by hand. The color patterns, bubbles, and optic textures that result are unique to each piece—no two ever identical. Most feature a small glass loop at the top so they can be hung in windows, gardens, or stands.
Common sizes range from petite 3″ sprites to 6″ and 10″ statement pieces, and finishes include iridized (rainbow shimmer), silver nitrate (mirror-like glow), and diamond optic (ribbed texture). Each effect catches and bends light differently, turning a simple glass sphere into a living prism.
Symbolism & Gifting
Both names carry the same spirit: to give a Kugel—or Friendship Ball—is to offer a wish for happiness, peace, and lasting connection. The colors and shapes reflect the uniqueness of every friendship: beautiful, bright, and always changing in the light. Because each piece is hand-made, the giver knows that no one else will ever have one exactly like it.
Many customers choose to pair Kugels and Witch Balls together: the Friendship Ball for love and connection, and the Witch Ball for protection and positivity. Together, they represent harmony and balance in the home.
